  2. I think the irony is that Mao is someone who is associated with the dark times for a whole country, yet even the American people accept the idolization, nevertheless communism in itself is generally considered “evil” in this country. Compare that to wearing a Bin Laden shirt to work, or even worse, a Hitler shirt if they make one?

I don’t personally condem or support any “-ism”s, but it’s almost tragic that certain symbols are so easily accepted, while the ideals and history are seldom contemplated.

Sigh, it’s been half a year since blue is gone, maybe he is better off without me? I’m still convinced that he will come back. My friend in Chicago is moving away, taking his brother for a cross-continent ride. Yet all these time I’ve not been able to take him out to “see the big city”. That’s going to be one huge regret of my life. :(

    I see your point.
But I disagree somewhat. I doubt there are people wearing Mao tshirt to work in Taiwan. And there ARE plenty of people wearing Ban Laden shirt to work in other parts of the world: Europe, Middle East, probably China. I still remember vividly the discussion on Chinese BBS during the time of US attacking Iraq in 2003. I remember how some people talking about Sadam as if he is the new hero of the century. People behave in mysterious ways.
Regarding whether the Americans not contemplating Chinese modern history. I actually took a “Chinese Modern History” class while in Berkeley. The text book was written by an American, and the instructor was from Taiwan. During the last class of the semester, the instructor played a tape of 崔健 for us. It was a pleasant surprise. I learned so much that I never knew about China in that class…
Nixon has a bad name in the US, but I think he is probably treated with respect in China. It is all about perspective. People tend to idolize great minds, whether they are kind or evil. Unlike infamous is basically bad.
Blue is probably seeing the big city everyday now. Don’t worry. :)
